Accent plants
Bright as the morning sun is
this charming yellow Hibiscus
Hibiscus come in many shades and types. This is the most common type
seen. They can grow eight feet tall and even more in the most tropical areas
of Florida. Some varieties are double or even hang like bells. There are a
few kinds that have green and white foliage so that, even when not
blooming, they are very decorative. Hibiscus are easy to grow and grow
quickly. Give them lots of sunshine and room to grow. They like water but
want a well-drained soil. If they get too much water, leaves will turn yellow
and die so place where drainage is good. Grasshoppers love them so
beware. It is best to use a balance fertilizer like 10-10-10-- when cold
weather has gone and again in early August. If weather is going below
freezing, they do need to be protected. Hibiscus make a wonderful plant in a
large pot.
Roses
Wild or Not
In many of our mountainous western states
Roses grow wild. They are so breath-taking
to see and smell. Hiking in the mountains
where everything is so dry, one hardly
expects to see such delicate flowers. At the
same time, it is easy to see that they are
real true survivors. They are one of my
most favorite flowers-wild or not.
